Bradley Cooper’s come a long way since “Wet Hot American Summer.”

These days, the 36-year-old actor is more likely to be found in a monster comedy like “The Hangover Part II.”

Cooper, who is currently filming “The Place Beyond the Pines” with Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes and Ray Liotta in upstate New York, spoke to Marquee about his his latest flick, “Limitless,” and some of his earlier, star-making roles.

CNN: You were a guest on Zach Galifianakis’ old VH1 talk show “Late World.” Have you been friends since then or did you just reconnect when it was time for “The Hangover”?

Bradley Cooper: We reconnected after that. We were both doing a job in Vancouver and we connected seven years ago and then lost touch again. With the first “Hangover,” I’d say that’s when we became really close friends and stayed that way ever since.

CNN: You have appeared in a lot of projects with large fan bases. What are you most recognized for: “Alias,” “Wedding Crashers” or “Hangover”?

BC: Mostly “Hangover” but for some reason in the past three weeks it’s been “Wedding Crashers.”

CNN: You played the villain in “Wedding Crashers,” quite effectively, before turning to hero roles in recent films like “Limitless.” Which do you prefer, the hero or the villain?

BC: I don’t look at it that way. I look at the project and the role as a character. I love both for different reasons.

CNN: You were credited as an executive producer on “Limitless.” Do you prefer acting or producing and have you ever considered directing?

BC: Yeah, it’s sorta been a dream to direct since I was a kid. I wanted to be an actor. I wanted to be a director. It’s finally about getting off my ass and trying to do it.

CNN: “Limitless” is based on a book about the drug. How do you feel about drugs that enhance performance?

BC: The movie isn’t really a statement on drug use. It’s really more of a comment on power, and whatever connection the audience makes from that they’re going to make. [Whether that’s] how relevant it is today with the use of pharmaceutical drugs to enhance…attention or energy or being able to sleep, but it really wasn’t some sort of didactic story about that.

CNN: The “Limitless” DVD extras reveal that the pill prop went through a few different designs before they settled on clear. What was it made of? Did you save any of them? Did it have a sort of placebo effect on you?

BC: I hope it did. I did have to pretend I was actually on it. The pill went through a few versions. There was one where it kind of looked like a doughnut – white with something in the center. Thank God we didn’t do that. We liked how clear it was, translucent, and could see through whatever it was. It was just a lot cooler. It was like a little baby silicone.

“Limitless,” a thriller about a man who takes a drug that allows him to access 100 percent of his brain’s power, is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
