Bradley Cooper says his family was ‘obsessed’ with awards shows when he was growing up.

The star has always had an interest in the movie industry, as his parents were fascinated with glitzy Hollywood ceremonies. Bradley has recalled waking up early as a child to see who had been nominated for the biggest prizes in the movie industry.

‘I grew up in a family that was obsessed with awards. Back then there were really only the Globes and the Oscars, now there is an awards thing every week in the United States,’ he told UK TV show Daybreak. ‘But yeah, I love all the pageantry of it. We used to get up early to watch the announcements, that is how obsessed we were.’

The 37-year-old has garnered critical acclaim for his performance in Silver Linings Playbook. As well as receiving a best actor nomination from the Critics’ Choice Awards, he is also in the running for prizes at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Bradley is thrilled his latest big screen outing has been so well-received.

‘It is pretty exciting that people seem to love the movie,’ he smiled. ‘Because it’s a word of mouth film so the more attention these awards shows give it then the more people will hopefully go see it.’

In Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley’s character Pat moves back in with his parents after spending time in a mental institution. Robert De Niro plays Pat’s father and Bradley enjoyed working with the Hollywood legend as he has always been a huge fan of his work.

‘Oddly enough it was Robert De Niro who was the bonding element between me and my father,’ he revealed. ‘This movie takes place in the town where I grew up in actually, so it’s very close to home.’

Hollywood superstar Bradley Cooper knew as a child growing up in a Philadelphia suburb he wanted a career as an actor, he tells correspondent Serena Altschul in an interview on CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD to be broadcast Dec. 23, 2012 on the CBS Television Network.

In a wide-ranging and emotional interview, Cooper goes back to his hometown, where he tells Altschul he fell in love with movies at 11 or 12 years old when his father would take him to see such films as “The Elephant Man,” “Apocalypse Now,” “The Deer Hunter” and “Taxi Driver.”

“I was mainly excited because I saw how much he was excited and I idolized him,” Cooper tells Altschul of those outings with his late father. He knew then he wanted to act. “It was a joke for people around me that this little kid was saying he’s going to be an actor. But I did. When I saw ‘Elephant Man,’ I knew it. It crystalized and I said, ‘That’s what I want to do with my life and I never swayed from that.”

Before embarking on an acting career, Cooper attended Georgetown University, graduating with honors. Later he moved to New York City to work on a graduate degree, while also auditioning for roles. He picked up work on one episode of “Sex and the City” and his career was on its way. He eventually moved to Los Angeles where he earned a part on the spy drama “Alias.”

While in Hollywood, he admits to Altschul, he gave into temptation, which got the best of him. He credits friends for getting him back on track.

“Watching myself peer into the abyss, and I thought, ‘Wow, I’m, actually going to sabotage my whole life,” he says. “I didn’t really recognize myself. I was lost.”

In 2005 he starred in the box-office hit, “Wedding Crashers” and then in 2009 he landed the blockbuster comedy, “The Hangover,” which changed everything. He’s been called the Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine and is earning critical praise for his latest film, “Silver Linings Playbook,” playing a bi-polar former teacher trying to put his life back together after being released from a mental hospital.

Cooper says he never expected this level of success, and is still amazed and humbled by it. “The truth is, I couldn’t believe that I got cast in ‘The Hangover,’” he says. “So I sort of gave up trying to rationalize my life a long time ago. The fact that I’m here with you on this show that I grew up watching with my grandparents with Charles Kuralt, that’s surreal.”

Altschul’s profile of Cooper will be broadcast Dec. 23, 2012 on CBS SUNDAY MORNING (9:00 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. Rand Morrison is the executive producer.

Jenny McCarthy is single and she’s hoping that when she launches her upcoming VH1 talk show next year, a certain leading man comes by the couch – Bradley Cooper.

“He’s my number-one crush,” Jenny told Shape magazine, which features the 40-year-old celeb showing off her toned midriff on its January 2013 cover. “I’m hoping he’ll be a guest on my show.”

Jenny is currently single, and she told the mag she is focusing on “me” time.

“I’ve gone on some dates, but I’m really taking a time-out for me at the moment,” she told Shape. “One thing I realized in my past relationships is that I’m the best damn girlfriend ever. I put so much energy into my boyfriends and their needs. If I gave myself that same kind of attention, who knows where I’d be at my life at this point? So for now, I’m putting everything I’ve got into my talk show and being a great mom.”

As for that TV talker – “The Jenny McCarthy Show” — which is coming to VH1, Jenny said it will showcase all sides of her personality.

“I’m scared and excited about it at the same time,” she said.

“Because it’s for an adult audience, the producers are giving me free rein and have asked me to push the envelope, I get to be my true, dirty self,” she added.

Jenny heads into her talk show looking better than ever, the result of a gluten and dairy free diet.

“That’s the best health change I’ve ever made,” she said. “I lost a few pounds and have much more energy. My new favorite thing is my soup diet. I make a ton of nutritious ones, like butternut squash and vegetable. When I want to drop 5 pounds quickly, I eat them for every meal for about 10 days.”

The first time David O. Russell phoned Bradley Cooper, it was midafternoon on a fall day a few years ago, and the topic, ostensibly at least, was Cooper’s possible involvement in either the adaptation of the horror-lit mash-up “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” or a couple of other movies Russell had recently written. The connection was spotty, so the actor climbed out onto the roof of his house to keep the conversation going. By the time they said goodbye, the sun had nearly set.

Cooper and Russell didn’t end up collaborating on any of those projects, but their lengthy exchange that day and subsequent meetings led to Cooper eventually winning the role of Pat Solitano, the bipolar protagonist in Russell’s chaotic comedy “Silver Linings Playbook.” It was a part originally intended for Mark Wahlberg in a movie that had initially been scheduled to shoot before “The Fighter,” the 2010 Wahlberg-headlined drama that marked Russell’s comeback as a filmmaker adept at making entertaining, off-center movies that connect with both critics and audiences.

“We spoke a lot while he was casting the movie, and by that time we’d really hit it off,” Cooper says. “But it was never about me being in it. Even at this point, I never thought it’d be in my landscape to be in a David O. Russell movie. But I will tell you that the whole reason I took out a loan from the government to go to grad school and then move to L.A. to be on a TV show was all to be here at a table with this man. That was the goal.”

Russell’s talent as a filmmaker can be seen with a simple glance at his résumé — “The Fighter,” “Three Kings,” “Flirting With Disaster.” He also has a realknack for casting well-known actors in roles that go against type. In “Silver Linings,” audiences discover that Jennifer Lawrence, playing a force-of-nature neighbor opposite Cooper, has a dazzling flair for screwball comedy. It’s also quickly apparent that Cooper, moving between Pat’s volatility and vulnerability, possesses a range unimagined from watching him in the “Hangover” movies.

“Pat’s hunger and determination to reintroduce himself were matched perfectly by Bradley’s determination as a performer who hadn’t shown many of his dimensions,” Russell says. “Bradley was really desperate to be seen as not just another pretty face.”

Cooper seems mostly content to let this assertation alone, despite Russell’s prodding otherwise. “As an actor, you want to feel like you have a partner,” Cooper says, looking at Russell. “Someone who wants you to jump on your own, but they’re also falling with you. You can’t be coddled, but you want to feel safe enough to jump. And that’s what he provides.”

When thinking about their collaboration, the image that comes to Cooper’s minds is “two heads coming together humming.” The two went over every line in the script together, revision upon revision, finding the character and devising a third-act arc that departs significantly from the source material, Matthew Quick’s 2008 novel. In the end, Cooper says, Pat became a way to investigate a part of himself, delving into feelings of anger and emptiness that he hadn’t fully explored.

Cooper’s mother, Gloria, who was often on the Philadelphia set during filming, found his transformation convincing, though he wasn’t quite sure if he wanted to accept her praise.

“She said, ‘Bradley, it’s like you’re not acting,'” Cooper remembers. “And I’m saying, ‘What do you mean I’m not acting? Mom, this guy’s bipolar!” Cooper laughs. “It was really funny because she was so dead-serious. But she wasn’t wrong. I had reached a point where it was just happening. But, yeah, couldn’t it have been like Face (the action hero Cooper played in “The A-Team”)? Isn’t that who I really am? It’s Pat Solitano? Really? OK. I guess I’m cool with that, Mom.”
